5 Axis Machining
R E Thompson installed two brand new Mori-Seiki five axes machines in July 2011.
Both machines are automated to enable un-manned running for 24 hours per day.
These machines are designed to be flexible in terms of batch size and style of component.
CNC TURNING with with 5 Axis Vertical Machining Capability
The NTX1000SZM is a twin-spindle CNC lathe with five axes vertical milling capability with an automatic tool-changer and a bottom turret to allow machining on both spindles simultaneously. Here are some examples of components that could be run, complete in one machining cycle on this machine:
This machine has a one metre bar loader for up to 65mm through spindle machining.
The NTX1000 SZM is a high-precision, high-efficiency integrated mill turn centre with a very advanced construction to reduce the effects of thermal displacement and has a 40% smaller footprint than the competition. It is capable of high-precision, multi-axis turning as well as five-axis machining, therefore all components within the size envelope of the machine can be produced in one machining operation.
Maximum turned diameter: 370mm. Maximum turned length: 424mm.
Parts can be unloaded behind the sub-spindle - the spindle swings over 180° to drop the component on to the conveyor.
The diagram above shows that while the bottom turret is working on the main spindle, the main machining spindle can work on the sub-spindle; the sub-spindle is shown tilted at an angle to create clearance, eliminating clearance prove-outs.
The bottom turret and the top milling spindle has the ability to work on either or both spindles at the same time.
CNC 5 Axis Vertical Machining with CNC Turning Capability
The new NMV3000 DCG® is an impressive high quality five axis machine-tool with an excellent table construction and highly dynamic and rigid Direct Drives at the B and C axis with ground breaking rotation range. Excellent stability is achieved through the Box-in-Box construction with no overhang and Octagonal Ram in the Z axis.
With 5 axes and 5 side machining, complex work pieces of up to 300 kg can be produced in just one setting.

This machine will be integrated with Mori-Seiki's AWC (Automatic Work-peice Changer) with 114 pallets, this allows RET to run the machine unmanned at night and at the weekend providing our customers with the maximum value for the technology available today.
RET has a NMV8000-DCG with much larger machining capacity on order with a delivery due late 2011, we are taking orders for capacity on this machine now.
